WHOOP was founded in 2012 by Will Ahmed. The company says Ahmed began building WHOOP after wanting to understand how training was affecting his body. WHOOP has also stated that it was founded at Harvard Innovation Labs in Cambridge and has been headquartered in Boston since its founding.
The site documents product milestones that include the introduction of WHOOP 4.0 and WHOOP Body with Any-Wear Technology in 2021. WHOOP described WHOOP Body as a first-of-its-kind line of smart apparel that lets members wear the device on multiple parts of the body. In May 2025, WHOOP introduced WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG, which it says brought Healthspan with WHOOP Age, an FDA-cleared ECG feature on WHOOP MG, Blood Pressure Insights, a smaller form, and 14+ day battery life. The same announcement says the platform supports more than 145 activities.

WHOOP is based in Boston. The company says it opened a global headquarters at One Kenmore in Kenmore Square. In its 2025 WHOOP 5.0 and MG announcement, the company also said it was available in 56 markets and that the app supported English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
