About Rolex

Rolex links its history to founder Hans Wilsdorf. On its history pages, the company says Wilsdorf founded a timepiece distribution business in London in 1905 and used precise Swiss movements made in Bienne for early wristwatches. Rolex says the brand name was created in 1908. Its history material also says the company moved to Geneva in 1919, and that Montres Rolex S.A. was registered there in 1920.

Rolex documents several milestones in watchmaking on its site. It says a Rolex watch became the first wristwatch in the world to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision in 1910. It says the Oyster, described as the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch, was created in 1926, and that Rolex invented and patented the Perpetual rotor in 1931 as the first self-winding mechanism of its kind. Rolex also says the Datejust was launched in 1945 as the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window on the dial.
