Panerai states that its history began in Florence in 1860, when Giovanni Panerai opened a watch shop, workshop, and the city's first watchmaking school at Ponte alle Grazie. The brand history page also says the Panerai family supplied precision instruments to the Italian Royal Navy for years. In 1993, Officine Panerai says it entered the civil watch market with its first collection, including Luminor, Luminor Marina, and Mare Nostrum models.
The site credits Panerai's Radiomir patent of 1916 as the first of many patents in the brand's history. Its history page also says Guido Panerai & Figlio took out an international patent for the crown-protecting device in 1956. The same history page says Panerai was among the pioneers in producing watches with a visible case back.
