Grand Seiko was born in 1960. The brand’s history page says it was created from a determination to excel, and it presents Grand Seiko as an ideal watch with standards of precision, durability, legibility, and beauty. The site’s history also records the first Grand Seiko in 1960, the 44GS in 1967 as the watch that established the Grand Seiko Style, and the 1998 introduction of Caliber 9S55 as the first new Grand Seiko mechanical movement in twenty years.
The official history pages document several technical milestones. They state that the 95GS of 1988 was the first Grand Seiko quartz watch and that it delivered accuracy of 10 seconds per year. They also state that the 9F83 of 1993 introduced four innovations: the backlash auto-adjust mechanism, a twin-pulse quartz mechanism, an instant calendar change mechanism, and a protective shield construction within the case. The site records that 1998 brought a new Grand Seiko standard with testing over 17 days in six positions and at three temperatures.

Grand Seiko’s watchmaking is centered in Japan. The Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture is dedicated to Grand Seiko 9S mechanical watches. The Shinshu Watch Studio in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture makes all Grand Seiko Spring Drive and quartz watches in-house, and its page says that the studio’s predecessor, Suwa Seikosha, produced the first Grand Seiko watch in 1960.
