About Certina

Certina traces its history on its website to 1888, when brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth opened a factory for watch movements and components in Grenchen, Switzerland, with three employees in a workshop next to the family home. In 1906, the brothers introduced the brand name Grana for their watches, and the site says this was short for Granacus, the Latin name of Grenchen. The Certina name was officially registered in 1939, and the site says it comes from the Latin word certus.

The site identifies the DS Concept as a major part of the brand's history and states that Double Security has stood for durability since 1959. On its DS Concept page, Certina says the concept includes features such as scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, a reinforced case back, and a sealing system. The brand's history page also says a turtle shell has been the brand's symbol since the 1960s and that its outline appears on the brand logo.
