Cartier states that it has been a jeweler and watchmaker since 1847. On its watchmaking pages, the brand says the first timepieces appeared in the Maison’s registers from 1853, including men’s pocket watches and watches in pendant, brooch, and châtelaine forms for women. Cartier also says its watchmaking history includes the Santos watch in 1904 and the Tank watch in 1917.
On the Santos de Cartier pages, Cartier says that in 1904 Louis Cartier created the watch for Alberto Santos-Dumont so he could tell time while flying, describing it there as one of the first ever wristwatches. The site also says the 1847 MC automatic movement takes its name from the year the Maison was founded. Cartier’s movements page says its calibers are tested and approved in its laboratory for precision, rate stability, and resistance to shocks, magnetic fields, and mechanical aging.
