Bulova states that Joseph Bulova founded the brand in New York City in 1875. On its history pages, the company says he opened a small store in downtown New York City, and another page identifies that first shop as being on Maiden Lane. The Joseph Bulova collection page also says the company established a manufacturing plant in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, in 1912 for the total production of wristwatch components, and that the plant operated until 1985.
On its official history page, Bulova credits itself with pioneering standardized production of watches and developing what it describes as the first fully electronic watch with proprietary tuning fork based technology. The same page says Bulova created America’s first radio and television commercials, collaborated with Lindbergh, and participated in 46 NASA space missions. Bulova also says the Precisionist collection was introduced in 2010 and that Curv was introduced in 2016 as the world’s first curved chronograph movement.
Collections documented on the site include Archive Series, Precisionist, Marine Star, Surveyor, Sutton, Maquina, Series X, Super Seville, Snorkel, Futuro, and Caravelle by Bulova. The Archive Series page highlights Lunar Pilot and Marine Star Heritage, and the Precisionist page describes Bulova’s proprietary high precision quartz technology with a continuously sweeping second hand. The site also includes a Joseph Bulova collection, described as limited edition models designed in New York City and crafted in Switzerland.
Bulova’s site repeatedly identifies the brand with New York City, including references to the original Maiden Lane shop and watches designed in New York City. The U.S. site also includes a 150th anniversary collection. On Archive Series material, Bulova says its lunar pilot chronograph was worn during the Apollo 15 mission in August 1971.
