About Breguet

Breguet was founded by Abraham-Louis Breguet. The brand’s official history states that he left his native Neuchâtel in his teens to complete his apprenticeship in Versailles and Paris. In 1775, he opened his own workshop on the Île de la Cité in Paris, on the Quai de l’Horloge. The same history says he left France during the Revolution, returned in 1795, and later passed the business to his heirs.

On its history and tourbillon pages, Breguet attributes a series of watchmaking milestones to Abraham-Louis Breguet. These include the appearance of the first automatic watches in 1780, the gong-spring in 1783, the introduction of guilloché in watchmaking in 1786, work on the pare-chute shock absorber around 1790, the Breguet balance-spring in 1795, and the first subscription watch in 1796. The site also states that he obtained the patent for the tourbillon regulator on 26 June 1801.

Collections shown on the site include Classique, Marine, Reine de Naples, Tradition, Type XX, Héritage, and Expérimentale. The Classique collection is described as a direct heir to the creations imagined by Abraham-Louis Breguet. The Marine collection is linked to his 1815 appointment as Horologer to the French Royal Navy. Reine de Naples is presented as a free interpretation of the first wristwatch created by A.-L. Breguet for Caroline Murat, and the Type XX collection is described as created in the 1950s for the French Air Force.

Breguet also presents its manufactures in the Vallée de Joux and in Le Crêt-du-Locle in Switzerland. The house history adds that a workshop was opened in the Vallée de Joux in 1976. The site also includes dedicated pages for the house history, the tourbillon, and its collections.
